Blackburn with Darwen Music Hub supports many music activities across the borough using school facilities and based in community venues.

We are always prepared to look at supporting new developments which extend our current provisions and develop new opportunities for children and young people to engage with music making across different styles and genres. Current initiatives available for schools to signpost their pupils to include:

LYVE Urban Choir

Currently running at Witton Park Academy this group mixes melodies and singing with vocalisations and beatboxing.

Heartbeat Drumming more

A mix of drumming styles using Bhangra, Samba and African rhythms. These sessions take place across different schools and in different community centres and youth clubs. We perform in Blackburn and are looking to set up a regular weekly community drumming group in 2016. Get in touch if you would like some sessions in your school.

Instrumental Jam more

Weekly instrumental ensembles after school for players at beginner and intermediate levels from local school clusters for develop their instrumental skills within ensemble playing.

Steel Pans more

Steel Bands currently rehearse at Witton Park Academy, The Redeemer primary school and at the Bureau Centre for the Arts in Blackburn.

PopRecycle more

An open access band session aimed at intermediate and advances players base at the Bureau centre for the Arts in Blackburn.

Soundtracks more

A project which we have been able to develop with support from Youth Music to support the musical engagement of 13 -- 19 year olds, including those who have had little opportunity to take part in musical activity. This project will include blocks of workshops in secondary schools and ongoing delivery at Blackburn Youth Zone and at Youth Centres throughout 2016 and 2017. There are opportunities for trainee music leaders and for young people to be involved in planning. Music Factory more

Based at Witton CLC on Buncer Lane, Blackburn, this is BwD Music Hub's Saturday Music Workshop. Open to anyone from age 8, any ability with any level of musical experience, this is an opportunity for young people to develop new skills whatever their musical background. The session runs from 9.30am -- 1.30pm (children can come to all or some ) includes instrumental tuition, ensemble work, rock school sessions, recording and production, composing music, music theory, performance opportunities and loads more.

Open Floor concerts

These run fortnightly at Witton CLC or at community venues and are an opportunity for children and young people to have the chance to perform in public. Some are led by different groups or schools and some are totally open access but all provide schools with an opportunity to bring groups of children to perform or to signpost individuals and their families to an opportunity to develop their musical confidence or to listen to others play or support friends.

In addition to the out of school activities offered by Blackburn with Darwen Music Education Hub all pupils within the Borough can also access any of the 45 bands and choirs offered each week by Bolton Music Service.

Bolton Music Service also able to offer individual 30 minute music centre lessons.


Blackburn with Darwen Music Hub provides workshop opportunities throughout the year across a range of music styles and genres. Please get in touch if you would like anything as we have connections across the region with organisations who are able to deliver sessions that our team does not cover.

School workshops typically cost £200 half day/£350 full day. Prices do vary so please get in touch for more details.

Our current programme:
  • Bhangra Drumming A workshop introducing Dhols and Bhangra rhythms.
  • Djembe Drumming An introduction to African rhythms and percussion including djembe drumming and African songs.
  • Brazilian Samba An ideal workshop to explore some of the instruments and rhythms of Brazil which can be translated into ideas for classroom and curriculum delivery by specialist and non specialist music teachers. A workshop and CPD opportunity in one!
  • Ghanain Experience
  • Music Box A half day (2.5 hour) for your setting made up of three 45 minute sessions for different groups. Age: 0-6. Cost: £100.
